CHALK + MEMORIAL DAY SNICKERDOODLES

I know it's a bit late for a Memorial Day post, but hey we still celebrated so here you go: Chalk. Lewisville had a chalk festival in the Historic Downtown. I love calling downtowns "Historic", that way even if it's a lame downtown you still feel like it's special right?

It had rained buckets about an hour before we went so we weren't sure if anything would be there. Some chalk art still remained. And sadly the rain did not dampen the spirits of an extremely loud Rolling Stones cover band (including rambunctious saxophone solos).

Somehow V could sleep through a too loud rendition of Paint it Black. The best part of the festival was trying these:

Deep fried turkey wings. They had a hint o' spice to them and were so delicious. I can really only eat my turkey fried. Turkey is one of those foods that I just put up with. I'm no great lover of the turkey.

On Memorial Day I wanted waffles really badly. I never want waffles (we don't even own a waffle iron) and I also didn't want to drive somewhere to buy or borrow one. So I made pancakes with waffle batter while Husband mowed the lawn. When they first came off the pan they were amazing. Super fluffy but with the type of crisp edge that can only come from a cast iron pan. Lawn mowing, though, takes longer than pancake making, so most of them were just warm and soft. But I haven't got much to complain about with homemade pancakes usually.

I also made a crisppie. I made this up, or at least I thought I did until I found recipes for it. I wanted a fruit pie, but Husband is self-proclaimed "not a pie person", BUT he does like fruit crisp. So I made a pie and put crisp topping on it. This one was a cherry and nectarine crisppie. It was very good. I also made snickerdoodles. And can you believe it, this was the first time I had ever made them? They were so good. I'll share the recipe:

Snickerdoodles

2 3/4 c flour
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
8 tbsp butter
1/2 c shortening
1 1/4 c white sugar
1/2 c brown sugar
2 tbsp cinnamon
2 eggs

1} Pre heat oven to 350. Martha says 400 but I had better success at 350.
2}Sift together flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
3}In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, combine butter, shortening, and sugar. Beat on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Scrape down sides of bowl. Add eggs, and beat to combine.
4}Add dry ingredients, and beat to combine.
5}Use a small scoop to form balls of the dough. Place about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. Bake 10 minutes, rotating the baking sheets after 5 minutes. Transfer the sheets to a wire rack to cool about 5 minutes before transferring the cookies to the rack.
6} Sprinkle plain cinnamon over the top.

So good. And baking at a lower temperature made them chewy. They were even better the next day
