Washing Dishes like a Pioneer

Well, I can't seem to work my schedule out to find time to blog very often, but I'm sure very few of you are worried about that.

Husband tries really hard to not ask me what I do all day -because he's a good husband. But we stay busy for sure.

Right now: Vera is asleep, and I am blogging, and before she wakes up I need to finish the laundry and try to finish the dress I am sewing for her.

Earlier today: I tidied the whole house, rearranged the pantry shelves, started laundry, put away dishes, transplanted a blueberry bush, a mint plant, a lavender plant, a sage plant, and a chives plant.

This week: Oh this week. So the sink plugged up again. Sigh. And my plumbing skills weren't up to the task. So we called a plumber (but Duh, I'm dumb, I didn't schedule it through the home warranty so we had to pay for it out of pocket -I sounded really sad on the phone so they're going to look into reimbursing me) and then noticed that on the back side of the sink there was water damage and...

black mold. :(

This plumber didn't want to look at it  because it would cost too much to just rip open my wall. So Husband ripped open the wall and we found no leaks -anywhere!

So we call another plumber. He looks around and around and No Leaks. Anywhere. He decides he needs to cut another wall behind the dishwasher (which means he had to turn off the water in the kitchen -more on this later). And guess what he found:

The pipe through which the AC condensation drains was cut and never repaired. What does this mean? All the water from the AC has been dripping between our walls for 7 months. Splendid.

This plumber was a doomsday prophet and estimated the entire kitchen and bathrooms would need to be gutted and rebuilt. So I had to call the insurance and they came to look at it.

Good news and Bad news. Good news? Our house wouldn't need to be gutted -there wasn't that much damage. Bad news? Insurance wouldn't cover a penny because A) We moved into the house when this was already happening (pre-existing condition) B) They don't cover water damage from pipes unless they have burst C) they don't cover faulty workmanship and D) They don't cover water damage that has been seeping for more than 14 days.

But we figure we can fix it. Husband is apparently a master at sheetrock -he's been hiding his skills -and we just need to dry it out and disinfect between the walls.

Yay for owning a home! :D

But that wont happen until this weekend. In the mean time our dishwasher is still unplugged -no big deal -and our water in the kitchen is turned off. So, I am washing dishes like a pioneer for a few days. I fill up a giant kettle with water and wash the dishes with that. It's actually not so bad and I am definitely saving water.

Bonus:

Yesterday I went to the garden shop to buy some bulbs and fertilizer and bug powder (sigh, another time about this one. To hell with you, squash vine borers!)  and I was later getting back than I thought. And Vera was very hungry so she was crying and whimpering. I tried to go a faster way home but didn't realize that I was in a school zone as I am barreling down the road. Oh, yes. And a car (who I am choosing to believe was being friendly and warning me that I was speeding and not honking and shouting obscenities at me) honked at me wildly just as a cop pulled up behind me.

But wait, this story gets better! I was driving my in-laws car which had out of date registration and no insurance paperwork in the car! Huzzah! Such a lucky day.

So I teared up, and Vera is still wailing, and the police officer gave me no tickets. Seriously. I think he felt badly for me -way to go V. :) So what could have been a very very bad situation just made me scared enough to throw up, but I didn't have to come home and tell Husband that I just cost us $500 unnecessarily.

And now you are all caught up. I'll bemoan my garden woes at a later date. :)
