Our school photo frame wall is coming along nicely. V is so flustered about not smiling in her photo this year. Even her teacher laughed at it. She claims someone photoshopped out her smile. :)
Matt and I went out to dinner on Wednesday and the kids stayed with Grandma and Grandpa and helped plant some flowers.
His science is a little bit off but his logic is sound. This is evidence of the high quality education I'm giving these students.
Vera had her first piano recital. She was nervous at first but played beautifully and felt so good afterward.
Bread bread bread. My delight.
On Sunday morning the kids and I went to work on cleaning up our backyard and throwing away nonsense. I asked Theo to throw away several broken pieces of PVC pipe. He suddenly screamed and we ran to him. Out of one of the pipes fell this evil looking mass of ick. We thought it was a rotting kitchen sponge until we noticed the bones poking out of it. Turns out it was an owl pellet or something similar. I don't know if other birds pellet their food like owls, but it seemed pretty big to be an owl. Once we figured out what it was, Theo was in raptures picking out all of the bones and assembling them. He carried this bag around with him for the rest of the day.
Early in September I ordered myself a dress form. I've always wanted to have one and it took a long time to find one that suited. Unfortunately it took over two months to arrive. It came with padding to adjust the size to be exactly to your proportions. The kids have been in stitches all weekend over the bottom padding.
We inherited a grandfather clock from Matt's late grandmother. We finally found a place to put it and I've spent all weekend rearranging our entryway solution to accommodate. I love to hear the ticking and chiming throughout the day.
Matt went away to Oklahoma for the weekend with two of his brothers-in-law, and a brother of one of the brothers-in-law.
They did very manly things like hike,
and pose strangely,
and make inappropriate jokes about rocks.
They also punished themselves by eating the worlds hottest taco and feeling sick for hours later.
We hardly noticed he was even gone and I don't think we missed him at all. ;)

After I tickled them for a minute, "Wow, I didn't know you were as fun as Papa."

V was supposed to walk up on stage to introduce herself and her piano piece for her recital. Her piece didn't have a composer so she didn't know what to say. I told her you just say the title and then, "A traditional." She thought that sounded weird and argued with me about it for longer than I care to admit. Finally she agreed. When she went up to the stage she pulled down the mic and said, "Hi. I'm Vera Cole, I'll be playing Russian Sailor Dance..." then she looked me straight in the eye for half a beat. And then walked to the piano to play her song.
And here is a video of her being perfectly and wholly eight years old.
